Phase 2: Guánica Emergency Preparedness Plan & Shelter Design – Oasis Neighborhood

Phase 1, completed in 2021, consisted of a Municipal level analysis to establish 3 neighborhood community centers that transformed into shelters in time of emergency. Led by resilientSEE-PR, these three locations were designed through a collaboration with Danniely Staback, Voluntariado de Ingenieros y Profesionales de Puerto Rico, Resilient Equities, Code Red, Perkins&Will and the Boston Architectural College.

For Phase 2, ongoing, focused on calibrating the size and scope for one of the neighborhood Community Centers / Shelters and creating a formal submission for FEMA funding. The redesigned center is 7,800 GSF and able to host 201 individuals in shelter modality. The Letter of Intent submitted was for $8.7 Million. Most of 2022 has been devoted to answering technical questions for FEMA after the initial March submission.

Phase 2: Arenas Community Center / Emergency Center - Community Kitchen Design Guánica, P.R.

Phase 1 of the project, completed at the end of 2021, was the structural stabilization of the main building which contains the public bathrooms, kitchen, back-of-house and dining, and administrative space. For that phase, resilientSEE-PR partnered with Voluntariado de Ingenieros y Professionals of Puerto Rico, Perkins&Will, Resilient Equities, Marc Wouters Studio, and several individual volunteers to deliver an existing conditions assessment identifying improvements needed and validating program use.

This new effort, Phase 2, focuses on the kitchen, back-of-house and dining spaces fit outs, and equipment and furniture selection. The kitchen design is flexible, able to adapt to emergency events for enhanced food delivery capacity and able to contract to allow the dining spaces to flex as an event or training space. Similarly, the furniture selection (foldable tables and stackable chairs) supports that space flexibility. The next step is to help identify donated or discounted equipment and help fundraise for the project implementation.

Water Filters Fundraising Campaign

After hurricane Fiona hit Puerto Rico on September 17 to 19, the southern part of the Island was left with 12 to 20 inches of flooding that destroyed homes, roads, and bridges. resilientSEE-PR, Bags of Love, and Círculo for Puerto Rico, three organizations that have been invested in recovery since hurricane Maria hit in September of 2017, began fundraising for water filters. Our goals was $5,000 for 500 filters. resilientSEE raised $2,700. We are thankful to everyone who donated and to our partnering organizations for working together toward the $5,000 goal.
